As the second largest city in southern Germany (behind Munich), Nuremberg is a dynamic town with a rich history.

Founded in the eleventh century, Nuremberg's darkest hour came in World War II, when Allied bombings all but destroyed the city. Thanks to a massive rebuilding project, the city has been restored to its former glory. Today, Nuremberg enjoys a healthy economy, which is primarily grounded in electronics and transportation, as well as a thriving tourist industry. Visitors come for a taste of Old World Bavarian beer and sausage. During the summer, Nuremberg's historic area, Altstadt, is alive with concerts, dancing, and a festive nightlife. Noted attractions include Burg Castle, Kaiserburg, the Albrecht Dürer Haus, and the bustling Hauptmarkt. A busy market place whatever the time of year, Hauptmarkt is central to life in Old Town Nuremberg and becomes especially popular at Christmas time, when the seasonal Christkindlesmarkt takes place here. Local produce is often for sale at Hauptmarkt, while nearby, the surrounding medieval architecture, bars and cafes will provide plenty to keep you occupied. Be sure to try a bite of the delicious Lebkuchen, the fragrant gingerbread that is sold in attractive coloured boxes. The main attractions nearby include the historic Frauenkirche, perhaps better known to visitors as the Church of Our Lady, and also the beautiful Schöner Brunnen, a decorative well painted in gold, red and green.
The city also puts on great festivals, including the Christkindlesmarkt each Christmas, and the annual International Toy Fair.
