in Piedmontese is a city in Piedmont, Italy, and the capital of the Province of Alessandria. The city is sited on the alluvial plane between the Tanaro and the Bormida rivers, c. 90 km southeast of Turin.
* History
The history of the Alessandrino is linked at the alliance with the Lega Lombarda, Genoa, with whom it fought, and at the domain of Visconti, Sforza and Savoia, to arrive to the figure of Napoleon, whose name is linked at the battle of Marengo.
For its historical importance, Alessandria offers to the tourists many architectonic works, such as Palazzo Ghilini by a famous architect, Alfieri, Palazzo del Municipio, Palazzo Cuttica, the Cathedral, the Church of Santa Maria di Castello, the ex military hospital, which now is restructured to put up exhibitions.
The Alessandrino is also synonym of cultural events: every June in Marengo, headquarter of the Battle Museum, takes place the commemoration of the battle between French of Napoleon, and the Austrian, in June 1800, in July takes place the rally of motorcyclists "Madonnina dei Centauri" in Castellazzo Bormida. As much important is the market show of typical products of Alessandria, every November, for the recurrence of San Baudolino, patron of Alessandria.
Not so far from the town, you can visit the castles of Piovera and Oviglio, or the Monumental Church of Santa Croce, in which you can admire works by Vasari and Moncalvo, apart from canvas of Genoa school of 16th and 17th Centuries: the church, in Bosco Marengo, was wanted by Pope Pio , born in the town in 1504.
The Alessandrino is also land of wines, and gastronomic proposals, like the cow salami (of Mandrogne) poured boiled, and the "rabaton" (of the zone of Fraschetta), with herbs, ricotta and eggs, and agro foodstuffs of the Piedmontese tradition, like the red beet, the pumpkin and the scorzonera of Castellazzo Bormida.
