sits on a low hill where the Rhône river branches in two parts to the sea. The commune is the largest in France, with an area of 76,000 ha (about 170,000 acres). The town dates back to the 7th century BC, and was a major Gallo-Roman city. The major Roman sites, such as the Arena and the Theater, are unique in that they are integrated into the houses and buildings of the town, rather than sitting apart as they do in places such as Orange.
Southwest of Arles is Aigues-Mortes; a very historical, walled town, from where the Knights departed on their Crusades. Probably very crowded with tourists during the summer. Not described in Beyond because it's outside our area.
Northeast of Arles is Les Baux-de-Provence. Very touristy, but interesting (described in Beyond). It does require a lot of walking for a visit, and close parking is difficult during the season.
- St. Remy-de-Provence is a good town to visit; many things of interest; plenty of terrace cafés for the less energetic to rest while others tour.
East and northeast of Cavaillon is an area with lovely little villages fairly close together. Have a look at the appropriate Beyond maps and villages pages.
Arles is now the gateway to Camargue, land of the Gypsies and meeting place of the Camargue cowboys,
Today the ferias or bull runs and bull fights are held in this very same arena (12,000 seats) that was the scene of the Roman games in the first century!
? The Provençal poet Frédéric Mistral (1830-1914) was born near Arles.
? Jeanne Calment (1875-1997), the oldest human being whose age is documented, was born, lived and died, at the age of 122 years and 164 days, in Arles.
Salon-de-Provence
town, Bouches-du-Rhône département, Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur région, southeastern France, northwest of Marseille. Founded in pre-Roman. Salon achieved importance in the Middle Ages as a centre of the olive oil trade. It was the home of the 16th-century astrologer Nostradamus, whose house is preserved and whose tomb is in the 14th-century Collégiale Saint-Laurent. Other monuments are the fortified Château de l'Empéri (12th-13th centuries), a former residence of the archbishops of Arles; the 12th-century Romanesque church of Saint-Michel; and the 1630 clock tower.
