Marseille
Looking out across the azure Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by rolling hills and the white limestone cliffs of the Calanques, Marseille enjoys a fantastic setting. And as many locals will tell you, in that peculiar accent that foreigners find both alluring and tricky to understand, they are proud of their heritage here.

The gateway to Africa and a crossroad for many ships in the Mediterranean, Marseille has always been a cultural melting pot. Today it's a vibrant place enjoying a new breath of life.
The booming music and fashion industries draw a trendy young crowd that has injected new energy. Marseille has also been chosen as European Capital of Culture for 2013, and this will allow it to showcase its new face to the world. The city boasts 22 museums, 17 theatres, an opera house and a sports stadium.

Marseille has rhythm and spice, and its inhabitants are fiercely proud of their city. Though twice as big in area as Paris, it is still thought of as a series of small "villages," each with its own unique history and traditions. The more popular villages include le Panier, La Belle de Mai, Mazargues, le Roucas Blanc and Saint Giniez. Some are known for their beaches (La Vieille Chapelle), some for the famous artists who were inspired there (Cezanne and Braque in L'Estaque), still others for their charming ports (La Vallon des Auffes, La Pointe Rouge, le Vieux Port).
Be sure to enjoy a fantastic bouillabaisse on the Vieux Port before you leave !
