An International Atmosphere

The medieval city of Hanover, capital of the Lower Saxony state, is located on the River Leine and close to the Eilenreide, which borders the city to the east. It is northern Germany's third largest town after Hamburg and Bremen.
Central Hanover is fairly compact and despite serious bombing in the Second World War, still retains a true historic character, with many reconstructions of period buildings and renovated architecture. The Hanover Fairground is amongst the city's top attractions and hosts some enormous trade fairs and expos, in particular CeBIT, the world's biggest information and communications technology fair.
Top tourist attractions in the city include Hanover Congress Centrum; Sea Life Aquarium; Hanover Zoo; Eilenriede Park; and Herrenhauser Royal Gardens - offering landscaping on a grand scale, with a grottos and the famed Grosser Garden (Great Garden).
The 36 most important sights of the city centre are connected with a 4.2 kilometres (3 mi) long red line painted on the pavement. This so-called Red Thread marks out a walk that starts at the Tourist Information Office and ends on the Ernst-August-Square in front of the central station.
Landmarks in Hanover are both old and new, natural and man-made. Particularly notable is the Aegidienkirche - extremely picturesque remains of a 10th-century church; Kropcke Square; Maschsee Lake - an enormous water playground with boating, waterfront restaurants and beer gardens; Hanover Town Halls (Rathaus) - with both an Old Town built in the middle ages, and a contrasting New Town Hall nearby; and Waterlooplatz / Waterloo Memorial.
Cultural attractions within Hanover include many interesting museums and noteworthy galleries. You can choose from the Lower Saxony State Museum; the Historical Museum (Historisches Museum); Hanover State Museum (Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum); Sprengel Museum - an impressive art gallery, with paintings by leading artists such as Picasso and Klee.
The International Firework Competition that takes place in Hanover on five different dates from May to September is the time to see the city's Baroque Grosser Garten all lit up with splendid fireworks.
One thing that brings Hanover's streets to life is the street art. The urban streetscape is enlivened by brightly coloured sculptures known as 'Nanas' by French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, and a series of extravagant bus stops, created by international designers.
