is a commune in the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne in central France
Thiers is a picturesque town clinging to a mountainside and dominating the narrow gorges of the Durolle river one one side and looking down on the plain of Clermont-Ferrand on the other.
Situated North of Ambert,
Built on the slopes of the valley of the Durolle river Thiers has used the river water to drive the forges and blade-makers' wheels for centuries and along the deep valley bottom the location of the old workshops can be made out. There is a knife museum, the Maison des Couteliers which is worth a visit.
Thiers is best known as France's main manufacturer of knives and accounts for some seventy percent of all French production.
