San Marino is an enclave in Italy, on the border between the regioni of Emilia Romagna and Marche.
The resident population in the San Marino territory is approximately 30,000.
Its topography is dominated by the Apennines mountain range, and it has a rugged terrain. The highest point in the country, Monte Titano, is situated at 749 metres (2,457 ft) above sea level. There are no bodies of water of any significant size. San Marino is the third smallest country in Europe, with only Vatican City and Monaco being smaller. San Marino has no level natural land; 100% of the nation/state is built on top of the range.
Celebrations
- April 1st and October 1st of each year
Traditional ceremony held for the investiture of the two Regents (Capitani Regenti), the two Heads of State elected every six months by the Grand and General Council (the Parliament of San Marino).
- July
- Medieval Days
The most popular event of the summer when the citizens of San Marino turn back the hands of the clock and transform the historic City center into a true medieval village. Store and Hotel owners dress in period costumes; old-fashioned taverns present specialties of the epoch. This event was organized for the first time in 1997, with the collaboration of the San Marino Federation of Crossbowmen and depicts a historical re-evocation in the ideal setting of the lanes and houses of the San Marino City.
For five days during the second half of July, the streets are animated by the members of historical San Marino groups: the artisans of the Arts and Crafts of Montegiardino, fortunetellers, actors, the Courtesans of Serravalle, the Court, the Crossbowmen, the Flag-wavers and musicians of the San Marino Federation of Crossbowmen, the Corporation of Nobles and the Group of the Charlatans of the San Marino Association of Historical Games. Together, all of the above groups bring an ancient San Marino alive. The highlights of the event are the "palio" of the crossbowmen, the costumed parades and the flag-waving exhibitions.
- San Marino Ethnologic Festival
Since 1988, an ethnic music festival brings diverse and remote cultures into contact with the local population. From the Amazon jungle to Africa, from Eastern Europe to the Caribbean Islands, for an entire week in July of each year, numerous musical groups meet on the stage of the Cava of the Balestrieri, in the heart of the historical City center of San Marino, to share in the delight and fascination of their traditional music. Mount Titano thus becomes a "showroom" of the most fascinating places and people in the world.
- September
- World Motorcycle Championships - Grand Prix "Cinzano" of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera (end August, beginning September, every year)
The yearly appointment is at the motordrome located in Misano Adriatico. At the same time on Mount Titano a serious of sporting events, inspired by the motor theme, take place.
- The Founding of the Republic of San Marino (September 3)
A national holiday, rather like a State New Year's celebration, when the San Marino population celebrates their Patron Saint - not only with religious services. For this occasion, San Marino organizes crossbow contests and flag-waving exhibitions, the concert of the military band, a traditional game of bingo and, to end it all, the grand finale with fireworks.
- Exhibits and Markets
- Il Mercatale (March - December, 3rd sunday of the month)
Exhibit and market of antiques and other dated objects.
